In 2019, Texas recorded 3,683 gun deaths. California had 2,945 deaths, and Florida had 2,872 deaths. While those numbers jump out, look at Arizona’s death gun death number at 1,136. Arizona’s population is 6 million while California’s is like 40 million people. On a per-capita basis, Arizona more than doubles California in gun deaths.

It’s also interesting that pro-gun advocates like to talk about Chicago and gun violence as proof that gun laws can’t work. The theory is that because the city of Chicago has strict gun laws, the laws have been ineffective. While the city of Chicago remains plagued by violence, Illinois had 1,367 gun deaths in 2019. That means a state that is double the population of Arizona, only had 200 more deaths total.
